Dynamic discounting is a financial strategy that gives buyers a discount on the invoice amount if they pay their vendors before the due date. It’s an arrangement that works for organisations and their suppliers, incentivising early payments for suppliers while optimising prices for buyers.
Unlike static discounts, which offer buyers a fixed discount for early payment within a set period, dynamic discounting provides a flexible discount based on the actual payment date, so that the earlier the buyer pays, the higher their discount. For instance, payments within 5 days could provide a 10% discount, for 6 to 10 days an 8% discount, and 5% for 11 to 15 days, with payments after 16 days invoiced at full price.
Challenges Of Dynamic Discounting
Unfortunately, dynamic discounting can be time-consuming and problematic to manage using manual methods. In particular, manually managing and negotiating early payment discounts, and matching these up with the actual payment date, frequently involves extensive communication back and forth between buyers and vendors, and the system is wide open to inaccuracies and errors.
AIP And Dynamic Discounting
Today, most dynamic discounting agreements are managed through a dynamic discounting platform, which automatically calculates the discounted rate based on the payment date, applying pre-agreed payment terms between the buyer and supplier. Integrating with the buyer’s ERP and accounting systems allows for easier data transfer and synchronisation between the two platforms and reduces the administrative burden of the process.
However, getting the best discount depends on optimising the invoice processing cycle. A slow cycle will mean that the buyer misses out on those. By using Automated Invoice Processing (AIP) software alongside dynamic discounting, savings can be maximised by speeding up the time it takes for each invoice to be processed and paid.
AIP also overcomes one of the traditional problems with dynamic discounting; namely the difficulty of verifying invoice statuses in order to apply the correct discount. Processing errors and mistakes could result in the wrong discount being calculated and applied. AIP resolves this challenge by providing better visibility over payment terms, discount opportunities, and invoice statuses through the platform, providing up-to-date information to both buyer and vendor, and avoiding the issue of inconsistent application of discounts, and miscommunication.
AIP also speeds up the invoice process by making sure that invoice data is accurately and quickly captured and integrated with the buyer’s ERP. This reduces many delays and errors that traditionally plague the invoice process at the data entry, reconciliation, and approval stages so that the best discounts can be claimed.
